The town of Patterson is tucked into the northeastern corner of Putnam County, with Connecticut on its eastern border and Duchess County to the north. The Great Swamp watershed, while mostly forested, is a National Historic Landmark that provides critical habitat for birds, animals, and plants, and is also vital for flood control and water filtration. There are 14 miles of navigable water for paddlers there.
As of 2016, the population of Patterson was 11,909. The town is governed by a Town Board made up of its Supervisor and four Council members.
The Town of Patterson contains portions of three school districts. Most of the southern portion of the Town is part of the Brewster Central School District. Most of the northern part of the Town is within the Carmel Central School District. A very small portion of northeastern Patterson is within the Pawling Central School District.
Sustainable Putnam strongly encourages each of our towns to participate in either or both of the Climate Smart Community or Clean Energy Community programs. Currently, the Town of Patterson does not participate in either.
