As of 2018, the population of Philipstown was 9,731. The town is governed by a Town Board made up of its Supervisor and four Council members. The Villages of Cold Spring and Nelsonville lie within the town’s limits; each has its own village government (see links below). Philipstown has two school districts and two public libraries.
Philipstown has its own excellent recycling center, accepting many items without a permit. The Center even accepts “white goods” such as clothes washers, and will also dispose of appliances containing freon and other climate-changing refrigerants, free of charge.
